NORWOOD GROVE REVITALIZATION

June 21, 2000
Winnipeg, Manitoba

Norwood Grove will soon become an even more appealing destination for Winnipeggers and visitors alike, thanks to a revitalization project being undertaken by the Norwood Grove Business Improvement Zone (Norwood Grove BIZ). The Canada/Manitoba Economic Development Partnership Agreement is contributing $250,000 to the project.

The funding was announced today by the Honourable Ron J. Duhamel, Secretary of State for Western Economic Diversification and the Honourable Greg Selinger, Manitoba Minister of Finance on behalf of Jean Friesen, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs.

"This project will enhance the image of Norwood Grove, attracting people to the area and increasing job opportunities," said Duhamel. "This beautiful neighbourhood will become a more pleasant place to do business."

"The improvements to Norwood Grove will make this unique community a destination for everyone to enjoy and will help stimulate economic growth," said Selinger. "When governments and community work together in partnership to improve our neighbourhoods, wonderful results can be achieved."

"Norwood Grove has a long history as an important business district in Winnipeg", said Andy Holik, Norwood BIZ Chairman. "The Norwood BIZ is doing all that it can to encourage economic prosperity in the area. The assistance of the federal and provincial governments is helping us to meet this goal."

The project is two-fold, involving the redevelopment of Coronation Park as well as streetscaping along Marion Street and St. Mary's Road. Coronation Park will see the addition of a bandshell, along with improved lighting and landscaping. The Norwood BIZ plans to offer a range of programs in and around the bandshell, including business expos, art exhibits and entertainment. The streetscaping will include lighting, trees and benches. Both components of the project will serve to increase the visibility of the commercial area and strengthen the image of the district.

Through March 2002, the Canada-Manitoba Economic Development Partnership Agreement will direct $40 million into strategic projects which will expand the international competitiveness of key growth sectors, commercialize new technologies, assist small and medium-sized businesses and entrepreneurs, and enhance the long-term economic self-sustainability of rural and urban Manitoba.
